How to get yourself out of a FUNK

girl dances with an umbrella

Happy Saturday, ladies (with an emphasis on the happy)!

If you're anything like me, every now and then you seem to get into a 'funk' that you just can't get out of. They can last anywhere from a couple of hours to months. For me these funks can include having to drag myself out of bed, lack of motivation to do thing that need to get done and no feeling like getting out or seeing friends. We've all been there, some worse than others, but we can all relate!

Before I get into some ways I've discovered dealing with these feelings, let me give you a quick snapshot of my life. From September to the end of December I was working at a job that was sucking the life out of me. Now don't get me wrong- I loved the work and my coworkers, but the commute and the hours were killing me. Thus, in December when my contract came up, I decided I would part ways. Fast forward 2 months and I have yet to start a new job. I get anxious at the thought of applying to positions, I am lacking motivation to seek out new opportunities and worse yet, my bank account is dwindling because of it. Now don't get me wrong, I am a very positive person by nature, but for some reason I have found myself in this funk.

Lucky for me I have slowly been discovering various ways to deal with my minor depression/anxiety and I feel like I am on my way out and hopefully some of my tips will help anyone finding themselves in the same boat as me. Let's get to it!

1. Get moving

 All running 1

It doesn't matter if you hit up the gym, go for a walk outside, or make a date with Jillian Michaels and your DVD player, the bottom line is to get moving. One of my favourite resources is FREE online workout videos via YouTube and my go-to channel is Tone it Up. These ladies know what they're talking about and they are so beautiful. I'm also loving a new app I've discovered called "Moves". It uses your phone's GPS technology to track the distance you have walked. I am so obsessed with this! I even try and beat my distance each time. I've been walking everywhere!

Exercise can have amazing benefits to not only the body, but also the mind. When you exercise your body releases natural endorphins which are basically feel-good chemicals. If you start by moving your body just a little bit every day you will start feeling a huge difference in your mood and outlook every day.

2. Get outside

Just the act of being outside can brighten your mood. Even though it's still snowy and cold here in Canada, getting outside and breathing in the cool fresh air really makes a difference. Try getting outside for AT LEAST 15 minutes each day. Leave the computer screen at home and your phone tucked away in your pocket and try to truly enjoy being outside.

3. Write down your goals

 hand pencil

This is one of the best motivational tips I have come across. By writing out your goals each and every day you will be constantly reminded of them. By visually seeing them written down they become even more real. Also try reciting them out loud and really visualize them coming true. I am a firm believer in the power of positive thinking and when you can visualize your dreams, you will see them come true before your eyes.

In addition to this, I have recently come across the tip of writing your goals out in the present, as if they are already true. So instead of writing down, "I will lose 10 pounds by summer" write, for example, "I weigh 115 on July 1, 2013." By writing down your goals in the present, it causes your mind to shift the way it's currently working and start making decisions your 115 pound self would make. It's like magic!

4. Try something completely new

By getting out of your current routine and comfort zone, you will be amazed at what you might find. Try taking a community art class, join a recreational sports team or even something as simple as making a coffee date with a friend you haven't seen in months. By shaking up your routine a bit and putting yourself out there you could open doors to possibilities that you never even knew existed.

5. Nourish your mind and body

 a bowl of salad

How you fule your body, believe it or not, has a direct correlation to how you feel emotionally. Have you even craved a huge slice of doughy, cheesy pepperoni pizza and your so excited to gobble it up, only to find tha afterwards you feel slugish, tired and all you feel like doing is watching Netflix for the rest of the day? I'm sure we've all been there!

Instead, feel your body the foods you know it naturally craves like colourful fruits and vegetables and lean protein. By feeding your body natural, whole food after a week or so you will notice you have more energy to conquer the day.

6. Seek out inspiration

Finally, if you find that you are lacking inspiration or motivation, go out and find it! There are a million self-help books, CDs, Pod casts and even blogs that focus on self-development and self discovery. Lately I have been trying to read/listen just a little bit each day from a book that motivates me. Some of my favourites include:

The Secret by Rhonda Byrne (Basically the user's guide to positive thinking!)
The Secret (Film) (Includes great interviews and stories and I think it's available on NetFlix!)
The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success by Deepak Chopra
Awakening the Giant Within by Anthony Robbins (This is also available in an audio version, which I highly suggest- his voice alone "awakens" you lol)

I hope you will find some of these tips helpful and useful in your own life. Even if you don't find yourself in a 'funk' per say, following some of these tips will allow you to be even happier each and every day.

What are some things you do when your feeling down? Let me know!

Lots of love,

Jess

Bad, Blogger, Bad!

Hey Ladies!
Long time no chat! I have been absent for just over a week and I feel horrible. I feel like I get into blogging cycles- I either blog tones and tones in a short period of time, or I completely fall off the blogwagon for a while until I feel like something's missing.
I'm not going to moan and groan about a million excuses, but I was working a lot last week (for the last month for that matter). But, yesterday, Tuesday, was my last shift at work for a while. I told my manager that I was going to take all of September off so I can get a feel of my new school workload and schedule. I'm also going to be commuting 5 days a week to my school (about an hour each way) so I need to see when I am finding myself free to squeeze in some extra shifts at work. I don't start school until Sept 6th so I've decided that the time between now and the start of school will be my summer "me time". This Friday I am heading up north to go to my university roommates house, which is beautiful and right on the water, with all my other uni girls. I am so excited for tanning and sipping on cocktails all weekend!

I have some plans for some upcoming posts that I'm excited to start writing! Tell me, what is everyones' end of summer plans?

So Stressed: Life Update

I have been the worst blogger known to bloggerdom for the last couple weeks. I have had so much stuff on my plate that I couldn't find the time, and quite honestly the motivation to do any posts.
As some of you might know (I've posted this in a few posts before) I am starting a post-graduate program starting this September. My campus is in Toronto and my original plan, and had been for the last year, was to move in with my University roommate in Toronto. VEEERY long story short, there was vast miscommunication between where we both wanted/needed location wise in the city to be near where we needed to be.
So, my new plan of action is to commute into Toronto everyday. I live about an hour outside of the city, which isn't too too bad, although the wild Canadian winters we tend to have scare the pants off me. The upside is that I will be saving thousands of dollars I would have wasted on rent AND I don't have to leave my boyfriend. Although now I have a whole new plate of worries like what if I am the only commuter in my program and I miss out on a lot of social aspects of the program (which it is a VERY social/group oriented program), along with the stress of traffic, commuting, parking, my sad old car... blah blah blah. You might be reading this thinking that this really isn't that stressful of a situation, but for me I am the kind of person who needs a solid plan far in advance, and this situation has been all over the place for the last couple of weeks. So yeah, that is my story of where I have been. I have so many blogs I need to catch up on!
I hope to have some new post up very soon!

Spreading the Love: Favorite Blogs

Photo from weheartit

Hey ladies, I recently saw a post written by Katie on her blog: Blueberries "n" Strawberries about some of her favorite new blogs. This gave me the idea of doing a similar post of some of my favorite blogs to read in general. I love posts like this because it helps others discover awesome blogs that you maybe would have gone undiscovered, and also because it helps support fellow bloggers- it's all about positivity and spreading the love :) Here they are in no particular order:

The Dog Days are NOT over

This weekend was one of the nicest and sunniest weekends thus far this summer. It was sunny, hot, and perfect beach weather- so naturally that is exactly where I went. We drove about 2 hours north to the lake where my dad owns a trailer by the lake. I love it up there! I've finally got a little bit of (real) sun and a nice relaxing weekend away with the boy. We lounged in the sand, ate bbq, and sat by the fire- it was wonderful. What did everyone else do this weekend?

Creating My Sanctuary

As I have mentioned in a past post, this September I will be moving to Toronto to attend a post-graduate program. As of right now my future roommate (one of my roommates from University) are looking for our perfect, and reasonably priced, apartment in the city. I hate the chaos of moving, but at the same time I love the opportunity to redesign a new bedroom. I love the look of shabby-chic-ish, girly, romantic, vintage bedrooms. The colours I prefer are crisp whites, creams, soft pinks, and pastels. For the next couple months my eyes will be peeled for cute, vintage items for my new room. Here are a few pictures I have found for some inspiration. Let me know what you guys think. I would love some feedback! What style of bedroom/ interior design do you prefer?

Back from vacay and ready to write!

Well ladies, as you can tell, but probably didn't even notice haha, I haven't made any posts to my blog in months. I think I just felt uninspired and uncreative. Although, I have just returned from a gorgeous vacation in Cuba and I feel revitalized and ready to start doing more posts and really dedicating some time to my blog. Also, I feel like I would be more inspired if I found some new and fresh blogs. I feel like when I find a couple of blogs that I love to look at and read I get a boost of motivation. If any of you ladies have any blogs that you LOVE I would love to hear about them.

Also, I have decided that I would like to do a wide range of posts on my blog including recipes, reviews, product reviews, movie reviews, DIY recipes, personal pictures, and so much more. Any other ideas would be great too.

Other exciting news... as some of you may know I am a university graduate as of 2010 and I am taking this year off from school before doing post-graduate studies. Well, a couple of weeks ago before my Cuba vacay I went for a couple of school interviews. As of September 2011 I will be starting my postgraduate work in PR (Public relations). I am SO excited about it! And when I think about it, this blog will be good for me to keep up my writing during my school hiatus.

I look forward to more posting (and reading your blogs) more!
ciao for now :)
